As a part of an initiative mark, some friends and I are creating a National Anthem for our 'country.' In order to make it the best we can, I started researching, and these were the common answers:
- patriotic
-Uses the country's history
-Includes the traditions/struggles of the people
-(generally) strophic, meaning multiple verses to the same tune
Personally, I really enjoy Anthems, I love the feeling of patriotism they evoke. It's great playing them too, so you can share the feeling with others.

Do you find that they all get a bit repetitive after you've listened to a bunch in a row? They all seem to be the same particular style of bold, brash classical music.

Semi-funny national anthem story:

When my friend and I travelled to Uganda a number of years back, we spent a fair bit of time at a school. Every morning, they would sing their anthem (sort of like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6cOa6pniwU). When sung at full speed, it takes something like 49 seconds.

One day, they asked us to sing our Canadian anthem. We started, but we only got about halfway through before a little boy interrupted us and said, "why is it so long?" We didn't have a good answer. We stopped singing.

I also saw on one of the youtube videos for the anthem that the lyrics say, "O Uganda, may god upload thee" instead of "uphold thee". I thought that was a funny mistake.

Just a suggestion, maybe you could make it a not-so-traditional anthem. maybe use a different group of instruments like a piano or even an acoustic guitar with some drums or a synthesizer. It would give a modern feel to national anthems.
